In Westuganda near the town of Mbarara the government has promoted the voluntary settlement of former nomadic cattle breeders.

The aim of this project is to improve the situation of these settlers by enabling them to satisfy their basic needs from their own resources. Building and rehabilitation of water reservoirs ('valley tanks') is one such program. Settlers agricultural activities are encouraged to be diversified. Just as important are project activities concerning cattle farming and pasture management or the promotion of labor-saving techniques for women.
