About half the population of Uganda is under 15 years old. In addition, as a result of the civil war in the 80's and because of the remaining high rate of AIDS, there are an extremely high number of orphans and handicapped youngsters among them.

The Ugandan government is developing and running programs for those socially disadvantaged groups. The know-how of GTZ is helpful in supporting these activities.

Already available forms of help include steps to reintegrate street-kids and orphans into their families or communities. So-called survival training is also offered that teaches basic skills to increase the chance that such underprivileged children can earn money with their own hands.

Another part of the support program offered is for young girls who have become mothers at an early age. Part of the GTZ strategy is to provide information to these children about available aid and their rights.
